The year is 2016.
Clemson is back in the national championship picture.
The Tigers have a new coach.
And that coach is a man who has won four national titles in the past decade.
It was a year when Jimbo Fisher and Nick Saban had their moment.
But that’s not how the 2017 Clemson Tigers have remembered it.
On Saturday, Clemson will celebrate its anniversary, a momentous occasion for the university and its fans.
Clemson will be the first SEC team to play its first ACC game since 2001.
But in 2018, the team is in a whole new era.
It’s been just over five years since the Tigers went to the College Football Playoff.
Now that they’ve made the playoffs, there are no plans for a second straight season without a national title.
But the team has always had an aura of mystery and uncertainty about what it might do next.
That all changed on Jan. 3, 2021, when Jimmie Corby, a Clemson grad who had been with the program since 1998, stepped down from his position as associate athletic director to become Clemson’s head football coach.
Corby had been at Clemson since 1999, and it was his first year as the team’s head coach.
He had been part of the program’s football team for nearly two decades.
It seemed like a natural fit.
But a few days after the news broke, Clemson’s athletic director resigned.
His replacement was Mike James, a former player and coach at Florida Atlantic University.
Corbrey was hired on Dec. 31, 2021.
The team was in the midst of the most tumultuous time of its life.
It lost a key player, defensive tackle Alex Avila, to the NFL, and four other key players were dismissed or suspended for violating team rules.
That left Corby to replace Corby.
It was a decision that had fans and players scrambling for answers.
Was Corby really the right person to take over the program?
And who would coach the team now?
The speculation grew exponentially.
Corbet’s tenure has been marked by the team winning a national championship in 2017 and winning a third straight national championship a few years later.
In 2018, Clemson was No. 3 in the nation in total offense.
It ranked in the top 10 nationally in both passing yards and total offense yards.
In 2019, Clemson won its first national title since 1997.
But Corby had a lot of work to do.
It all started in December of 2021.
When Corby first arrived, Clemson had no offensive coordinator.
It had only four quarterbacks and two running backs.
And in an era of college football, the school’s offensive coordinator was a rarity.
Corbett took over as the head coach on Jan .
It wasn’t until a few weeks later that the Tigers hired Jimbo Cunningham, a veteran of six seasons at Florida.
He went on to win three ACC championships and four conference championships as the Seminoles’ offensive coordinator, a position he had held for five seasons.
But it was the success Corbett had had in the years leading up to that year that earned him the respect of many Clemson fans.
That year was the last year of the previous era.
That meant that Corby was tasked with rebuilding Clemson’s offense.
He hired the right guys.
He fired the wrong ones.
He was never able to turn that offense around.
Corbach has gone on to lead Clemson to the top of the ACC in both total offense and total defense this season.
It’s one of the best offenses in the country.
Corbett is a true believer in the system and believes that the team can thrive with the right people in place.
Corbet has had success recruiting high school recruits, a major factor in Clemson’s success.
It has been a long-term strategy, one that the school and its football program has pursued throughout Corbett’s tenure.
On Dec. 30, 2021 — just two weeks after the first national championship was won — Corbett took the stage at Clemson’s annual spring practice and announced the hiring of a new offensive coordinator for the 2017 season.
His name was Mike White.
The announcement didn’t come until the day after Clemson won the ACC title, but the following day, White received the most coveted job in college football: the head coaching job at Texas A&M.
White would be the youngest head coach in school history.
He would be a sophomore in high school when the school first became known as a power.
White was recruited as a wide receiver at Florida State, where he was an all-conference selection as a senior in 2004.
After graduating in 2009, White became a wide receivers coach at Miami, where his son, Ryan White, currently coaches.
White went on the defensive side of the ball in 2017, but he has been known as an offensive mind since he joined the coaching staff at Miami in 2015.
After a successful year with the Hurricanes, White was named head coach of the Miami Dolphins after serving as the offensive coordinator from 2016-17.
In 2018, White went 1
